Having watched The September Issue more than once, I know how iconic the September Issue of Vogue is… was… is supposed to be. It’s ironic how the nation of origin, which used to be a trailblazer in its own right, now falls flat when compared to ANY of its counterparts. Let’s discuss.
I’m just here to say it, US Vogue just isn’t the cultural reference point it used to be, and it hasn’t been for quite some time. There are many reasons for this, most centering around the reluctance the conglomerate, Condé Nast, seemingly has from enacting change in leadership positions. Anna must have capital D dirt on the chairholders of Condé Nast, because there is no other reason to explain why it feels like she expects to remain monarch until she dies. Babe, you’re 73, and you’re not Lizzie the Second, retirement could be fun, no? You’re not tired?
I, too, would probably want to hold on to an annual salary of approximately $3m for as long as humanly possible, but something has got to give! Even if it’s simply to step down from the helm (which she has stayed at with increasing amounts of control since 1988) at Vogue, and continue to pursue her many other obligations (including, but I’m sure not limited to, being Dame Commander of the British Empire). Anything would do US Vogue better than its current situation. She lacks the vision needed to appeal to my generation, who are now the major players of the economy (if I think deeply about this fact, I will vom). She lacks the vision for the diversity and inclusion needed for Vogue to have the same influence that it did 15 years ago. That could be because Anna herself IS the diversity and inclusion executive at Condé… a role that, frankly, makes less sense than certain people’s commitment to being off-theme at the Met. Maybe that’s actually the first step; hire someone that actually understands the nuances of being a minority (particularly Black) in America, and fast and pray for God to soften the heart of a woman who doesn’t acquiesce to anyone so she’s amenable to heeding the advice given x
The point still stands. Everywhere else does it better. The September issue has been a battle for the best, but my clear favourites have been Vogues China, Italia, Singapore, and Arabia. However, I’m going to leave every single one I can find below. Let me know which is your favourite.
That’s all.
